THE GRANNY FLAT

Into The Woods is a granny flat, lovingly renovated by the owners Esther and Joost, who live on-site on their 6.5 acre property with their beautiful brown Kelpie, Hunter. The couple have been welcoming guests to stay at Into the Woods since September 2021.

The granny flat is decorated in a coastal vibe with two key areas; the living and dining area and the bedroom and bathroom.

An upcycled surfboard greets you at the pale pink front door. The kitchen features bespoke craftsmanship with a gas stove and range hood, Chiq fridge, open-air two tiered shelving and a lovely island bench with a feature piece chandelier consisting of draping shells. In the kitchen, you’ll find a Nespresso coffee machine, Smeg kettle and toaster, homemade apricot jam, locally made honey (Traprock Ridge), eggs, milk, tea and coffee. There is no microwave or oven.

The living area includes an upcycled dining table and vintage cabinet holding all crockery and glassware. A TV and lounge rounds out this space with dried palm fronds in the corners too, which contribute to the coastal vibe.

Take two steps down into the bedroom and you’ll find a four poster Queen sized bed with linen bedding, rattan seating chair and chest of drawers. The bathroom is decked out with a recycled vanity and large feature mirror adorned with seashells.

There is no air-conditioning, however there is a ceiling fan in the living area and the bedroom, plus a Dyson air purifier in the bedroom.

The granny flat sleeps two people. The stay is not suitable for those with young children, given the proximity to the unfenced dam.

THE LOCATION

Into The Woods is located in Palmwoods, a rural town in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Palmwoods is a small town, lesser known than the more popular Montville (15 minutes drive) and Maleny (25 minutes drive), but do give yourself half a day to explore it. It is connected by Queensland Rail so there is a train station, a pub (Palmwoods Hotel), a burger joint (Rick’s Garage), a bakery (Rick’s Bakehouse), a mini supermarket (SPAR), a vintage store (The Shed) and a few cafes too.

THE AMENITIES & THE FACILITIES

Inside the granny flat, you will find Zero Co products in the kitchen and bathroom. The property runs on a septic system with large rainwater tanks built behind the flat. There are no laundry facilities.

Guests have access to Netflix and Wi-Fi.

Outside, the key feature is the outdoor bath. The tub takes approximately 15 minutes to fill and bath salts and body wash are provided in the bathroom. Grab the outdoor towels, slip into a bathrobe and pop open a bottle of wine to soak in the hot water whilst listening to the sounds of nature.

The dam is a short walk from the granny flat and here you have access to the woodfire pizza over and Weber gas BBQ. A woodfire starter kit is provided and you can purchase an additional bag of firewood for $20. If you wish to cook your own pizza, you will need to bring your own ingredients.

THE HOSPITALITY

Your hosts are Dutch expats Esther and Joost.

We were welcomed by Esther and Joost on the day we arrived and given a tour of Into the Woods and the surrounding area.

The pair are super passionate about living off the land, giving old things a new lease on life and reducing their impact on the natural environment. There is a beehive on the property, fruit trees (mango, guava, banana and lemon), herb garden and there are plans to continue growing more fruit and vegetables.

Esther and Joost offer picnic hampers (at an additional cost) with optional wine pairings for guests to enjoy somewhere on their property. Partnering with another local business, Thistle In The Woods, the picnic hamper goodies are constructed and made thanks to local suppliers and locally sourced ingredients. We were fortunate to enjoy a breakfast picnic in the shelter of the Stables given the rainy weather. Overlooking the dam, the fresh foods and serene view were a delightful way to start the day.
